Electronic delivery of journals is rapidly becoming commonplace in libraries throughout
the
world. Traditional print journals are now offering various versions in electronic
for
mat, new journals are appearing only in electronic
for
mat, and
the
re is a movement among
Scholars
in some disciplines toward self-
Archiving
of papers and o
the
r written materials. Librarians are becoming increasingly concerned with
the
challenges of preserving and
Archiving
written materials in
the
new digital environment. Manylibrarians and serialists have suggested that publishers must provide
Archiving
for
the
journals which
the
y print, including
the
ongoing updating and refreshing of
the
digitized in
for
mation. Some scholarly societies and associations are already pledging to maintain an archive of
the
materials which
the
y publish. Vendors and commercial companies who provide access to retrospective journals in electronic
for
mat are beginning to appear. O
the
r publishers claim that
the
majority of
the
responsibility
for
Archiving
of journals should fall upon
the
larger research institutes and universities and on a combination of regional, state, and national consortia of libraries. This paper will address
the
se concerns and issues primarily from
the
perspective of
the
moderate-sized library, with additional comments and concerns voiced by publishers, organizations, subscription agents, and patrons.
